Podcast v. Radio Stats

“Radio can get me in front of 1 Million listeners, what can podcasts get me?”

You’ve been lied to.

I recently got in a conversation with someone trying to hold podcasts and radio to the same standard. I was explaining how important the niche is, but the person kept talking about needing to be in front of the biggest audience possible.

Looking At the Numbers…

🕵️ Myth 1: Radio can get me in front of millions of listeners.
💡 Truth: Radio uses two main methods to get listener data: Diaries and the Portable People Meter (PPM).

Sample sizes of the population are selected, usually 1,000 people are asked to keep a diary of what they listen to, usually for getting paid a couple of bucks for their participation.

In the PPM method, volunteers (usually 1,000) are given a device that looks like a beeper and can figure out what that individual listening to.

The data collected is then multiplied by the population in that city to give you the total listener base.

😳 I was so shocked, I reached out to an industry contact and got the following response:

“Diaries Jeremy. They give a statistical number of people (typically about 1,000) a diary to fill out with what they listened to each day. Corruptible and old fashioned.”

🕵️ Myth 2: Only go on big podcasts.
💡 Truth: Niching is way more valuable because you can select the exact type of audience you want to be in front of, creating better ROI.

The bottom line: Radio doesn’t know who’s listening. Podcasts know exactly who is listening, and those numbers are tracked in public charts.

Don’t let the lie confuse you. Get on podcasts and grow.
